Today I took the giant step to name the journey for the next few months, The first round in 2014 was refereed to as “Operation Freeloader”, The recurrence in 2016 was of course “The Great Pelvis Adventure, Everything goes wrong”
So I here by christen this as “The Great Pelvis Adventure Part 2, Putting Right What Once Went Wrong”
Most people know that for me life is all about the stories, and this is unlike any story I have ever been a part of, it has everything, from glorious triumphs to dazzling defeats, a hero who doubts himself, a side kick who just shakes her head, and a lot of dogs and cats. To recap you the gentle reader who might be getting to this post via a google search for Chondrosarcoma, internal hemi-pelvectomy with limb sparing, or cancer of the pelvis, let me be brief.
In 2014 I was diagnosed with a low grade Chondrosarcoma in my left pelvis, I had a fairly short procedure to remove it and we thought it was all done, we were wrong, in late 2015 we found that my tumor was growing again and would need to be removed, after watching my tumor grow pretty rapidly we made the tough choice to do an internal Hemi-Pelvectomy with limb sparring surgery, June 27th we did the procedure, it had a great deal of hicups but after 92 days in the hospital and rehab I went home. This blog covers a lot of that journey.
So back to the here and now, today I went to the medical supply store and made arrangements for a wheelchair. I figure that having the wheelchair will allow me to be more active outside of the home, especially for the long walk I take from the parking ramp to where dispatch is at work; I will be picking it up tomorrow with the intention of practicing most of the weekend and next Monday. Monday also marks the day I go over to get a CT scan of my pelvis to send off along with the rest of my stuff to the company that prints the titanium pelvis to get that ball rolling.
It’s been a rather big day actually in regards to this new chapter in my recovery, not only did I arrange a wheelchair but I also am no longer taking my prophylactic antibiotics so that they can ascertain if I have any infections in my pelvis that could hinder my surgery plans. Mrs. Zm will be pleased by this I think, the meds make me smell god awful.
