Advice on being an old medic in a new world

So here I am, a week into my new service, and already I’m over thinking.

Advice for those seasoned EMS professionals on starting brand new at a service.

1. Remember no one knows you here, you may have friends who have shared adventures with you, but by and large you are just another probie, and you have to prove yourself.

2. Opera Non Verba, “Deeds not words” follow the advice you have given to every probie you have ever had to train in, don’t tell them how great you are, show them.

3. Your knowledge came with you, every odd trick, every miracle save, every dumb idea, as well as every smart idea that started as a dumb idea are all still in your head, pull them out when the chips are down.

4. Your preceptor knows a lot, they are there to make sure you are trained right, and to deflect bull shit for you while you are learning, its their job to deflect the comments of “well she has been around a while she should have known that” don’t make it hard for them.

5.  You are likely in a room with youngsters who are just starting their careers, they are eager to prove themselves, let them, your stories and experiences are still yours, sit back and listen, you might hear something.
