I want to first apologize for not getting this up yesterday, time simply got away from me and it took me a bit to analyze what was said.
so I will just start at the beginning:
I went to see Dr. Denis Clohisy yesterday to go over my MRI’s and to see what the next steps would be.
he and I discussed the results and they were as follows, it was to difficult to identify the exact type, grade, and stage of the growth I have on my pelvis, he was not able to definitively say it was a chondrosarcoma which is a maligant tumor in the bone and cartilage or a benign Enchondroma which is a benign tumor of the cartilage. there were some other possibilities such as a massive infection of the bone, it was interesting to note that the Ct scan a week previously and the MRI were different shapes and sizes, he explained this as the difference in the technologies and not a sign of a rapidly growing tumor.
they need to do a full body bone scan this week and those results will be read and looked at by the Tumor Board at the U of M, if they determine it is a cancerous growth I will be having a biopsy on the 16th of May, if not we will look at other treatments. He felt confident in saying that if it did turn out to be a malignant Chondrosarcoma that it would be a grade 1 tumor and easy to treat with surgery – from the tumor removal perspective, more on the other part in a bit.
Dr. Clohisy was helpful enough to draw out the location of my growth on a bone model I have, the area in red is the approximate location and size of my growth.
So what does this mean for me?
I have something impacting my hip joint, although I do not have pain or loss of movement it will eventually impact my life and it needs to be repaired. If it turns out to be a tumor of either type they will have to go in and cut out all of the red part of the image above and replace it with cadaver bone and cartilage, this will all then need to be held together with screws and plates, even with all of this work i might end up in a wheelchair or with extremely limited motion, best case scenario I walk with a cane.
Next steps:
I go in on Tuesday for a full body bone scan which will tell them a great deal about what they are dealing with, whether is a cancerous growth or not, and if I have any other areas of concern. I will also be getting a ct scan of my chest and head. They do have me slated for a biopsy the week after next in the event that the tests show a tumor
these results and my MRI and initial CT scans will all be brought forward to their tumor board and then a treatment plan will be put in place that includes surgery and possible proton radiation if the tumor is difficult to remove.
So not out of the woods yet, but not as deep.
